After school program

CHOSA, in partnership with Council on International Educational Exchange, recruits study abroad volunteers to join our after school program. This program is designed to help children with their literacy skills, math skills and overall social and educational development.

Our after school program provides direct services to the kids at the children's homes and youth projects we work with. At the moment we run programs at three children's homes: Abaphumeleli Safe Home, Baphumelele Children's Home, and Emasithandane Children's Organisation. We also send volunteers to S.A. Beware, a youth project in the shack settlement of TT Section.

Volunteers attend from Monday to Thursday during the University of Cape Town semester.

The volunteers usually work in partners of two or three. The children are divided into classes based on age and ability level and the volunteers work with the same group of kids for the whole semester so that they are able build strong bonds with them. Volunteers are responsible for planning lessons, developing a general curriculum, and organizing a field trips and outings for the children at the end of the semester. CHOSA’s on-ground team coordinates the program and facilitates monthly meetings with all CHOSA volunteers.
